Hinterland and the vicinity of Mošćenička Draga have been brimming with life since prehistoric times when this area was settled by the Liburnians, seamen of their time, after which the entire area was named Liburnija. Mošćenička Draga first developed as a fishing harbour of the City of Mošćenice, and it was first mentioned in 1436 as a settlement on the harbour near St. Marina. Mošćenička Draga was more intensively populated during the 19th century when the inhabitants of the surrounding villages on the slopes of Učka moved closer to the coast, because of fishing and the tourism activities that have been recorded for the first time. The Old Town strive steeply down to the sea and there is a small harbour with the fishing boats, small boats and the occasional berth for the tourist boats. Mošćenička Draga belongs to the Opatija Riviera and Kvarner region. The beginnings of tourism on the Opatija Riviera are linked to the year 1873 when Rijeka was connected by railway to Vienna and Budapest. The first hotel on the Adriatic coast, the Hotel Kvarner, was built in 1884 in Opatija. Guests from Opatija with carriages went on excursions to the romantic village of Mošćenička Draga, through which it has begun to record its tourist story.
Most of the approximately 900 present inhabitants of Mošćenička Draga are engaged in fishing and tourism, and these two activities are the bearers at the today’s local economy.
