Mošćenička Draga

Hinterland and the vicinity of Mošćenička Draga have been brimming with life since prehistoric times when this area was settled by the Liburnians, seamen of their time, after which the entire area was named Liburnija. Mošćenička Draga first developed as a fishing harbour of the City of Mošćenice, and it was first mentioned in 1436 as a settlement on the harbour near St. Marina. Mošćenička Draga was more intensively populated during the 19th century when the inhabitants of the surrounding villages on the slopes of Učka moved closer to the coast, because of fishing and the tourism activities that have been recorded for the first time. The Old Town strive steeply down to the sea and there is a small harbour with the fishing boats, small boats and the occasional berth for the tourist boats. Mošćenička Draga belongs to the Opatija Riviera and Kvarner region. The beginnings of tourism on the Opatija Riviera are linked to the year 1873 when Rijeka was connected by railway to Vienna and Budapest. The first hotel on the Adriatic coast, the Hotel Kvarner, was built in 1884 in Opatija. Guests from Opatija with carriages went on excursions to the romantic village of Mošćenička Draga, through which it has begun to record its tourist story.

Most of the approximately 900 present inhabitants of Mošćenička Draga are engaged in fishing and tourism, and these two activities are the bearers at the today’s local economy.

The crystal clear sea, beautiful nature and the most beautiful beaches, with the best gastronomic experiences attract visitors from around the world. Excellent fish restaurants and authentic Istrian taverns in the immediate vicinity will satisfy with its flavours even the most demanding customers. The village has a variety of sports and entertainment facilities, organized boat trips, boat rental and various beach accessories. If needed, there is also a physician, pharmacy, currency exchange, bank, bus stop and other facilities on your disposal. Facilities such as larger stores and petrol stations are available in Lovran that is 7 kilometres away, or in Opatija that is 12 kilometres away. Whether you decide to bask on the beach, or you’re more in the mood for diving, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, running, sailing, exploring the surrounding area or a party at one of the fishermen’s festivities during the summer months, you are on vacation and every choice you’ve made is the right one for you!

Beaches

The real value of Kvarner, Opatija Riviera and Mošćenička Draga are their beaches, preserved natural environment and the clean sea. The Sipar beach in Draga is considered by many the most beautiful beach of the Opatija Riviera, Kvarner, and perhaps the entire Adriatic. It is located in the centre of town, a few steps from the shops and restaurants. About two hundred meters away, there is a beach Sveti Ivan. The beaches are connected by the coastal promenade. Walk along the sound of the waves and the smell of vegetation that have equally relaxing effect throughout the year. Nudists will find their peaceful corner immediately after the beach of St. Ivana, on the Senjavac naturist beach. From there, the stairs lead up to the Mošćenice Old Town. If you want to enjoy more peace, we recommend you the Uboka and Jelenšćica beaches, between Mošćenička Draga and Brseč which you can reach by boat or by foot taking paths that leads from the main road. By boat you can reach Pod Brseč and the Klančac beach or to the seafront that is located something further to the Stupova beach and towards Lovran, where there is Medveja. In addition to the aforementioned, there are a number of small coves where you can seek shade and solitude while searching the coastline.
